Downtown GEMS | Downtown News | Downtown Voices | Arts & Entertainment | Toast & Taste The real and practical side of the broken RMS Titanic Though the infamous RMS Titanic sank almost 95 years ago, her prestigious voyage and tragic sinking have become a lesson to learn in popular culture. Fictional stories have been written, multi-million dollar movies have been produced and memorabilia has permeated our culture about the Titanic. It is through the archives, research and scientific experimentations that we get the opportunity to learn beyond empathy by re-living an episode of history. Collaborated efforts have been made to present an enlightening exhibit at Insights El Paso Science Museum for interested viewers of all ages who desire an in-depth and hands-on experience of what it was actually like to be on a luxurious mammoth ship only to have to abandon it to nature four days later. Actual artifacts of this royal mailer steamer are on display to make the near-centennial anniversary a welcoming reality. The exhibit will also feature some of the stories behind the passengers and crew of the Titanic, but if hearing stories from eyewitnesses is not enough to make the experience of the Titanic yours, interactive features are available for the eager, curious child/scientist within you. These features include commandeering the vessel away from the suddenly approaching iceberg, a mini iceberg to show approximately how cold it was that night and a tutorial and map indicating the process of underwater decay, among many other things. When asked about the relationship between this exhibit and the one in Las Vegas, Insights Executive Director Randall Hayes says, “The one [exhibit] you’ll see in Vegas will have the history and layout of the Titanic for people to see. The exhibit here does present the historical aspect but is focused on the science of what happened. The Titanic exhibit here will show you how it was built, found and what is happening to it now.” |
