The Plaza Theatre celebrates one year after rebirth
by Wendy Garrett

Twenty years ago, who would have thought that we would be celebrating the one-year anniversary of the Plaza Theatre re-grand opening? Last March, more than 2,000 people gathered outside the Plaza Theatre in anticipation of being among the first to enter the newly restored historic theatre. Memories filled the air as people exchanged stories of first dates, friendships and old movies seen in the theatre, which was once considered the “Showplace of the Southwest.” A year later, more than 94,000 people have been able to create new memories and enjoy performances, shows and events in the classic theatre, and many more have experienced the theatre in its grand splendor through private receptions and theatre tours.

For those who have not seen the theatre and would love to get a guided tour, the Plaza StarKeepers, the Plaza Theatre Guild, a project of the El Paso Community Foundation, offers one-hour guided tours every Tuesday at noon. A knowledgeable docent takes visitors through the magnificent building and retells its historical past and the incredibly detailed restoration process as well as highlights the various donors who helped contribute to the reopening. Tours are available at no charge, and private tours can be arranged upon request for groups of 10 or more at www.theplazatheatre.org.

The guided tours, sold-out performances and the 80 shows that have taken place this past year would not have been possible if it wasn’t for the support of the community of El Paso, the El Paso Community Foundation and the city of El Paso. Their dedication and enthusiasm in the project helped restore one of El Paso’s treasures to its original splendor for El Pasoans to enjoy for years to come. Thousands of memories have been rekindled and many more will be made at the Plaza Theatre.

If you haven’t caught a show at the theatre, be sure to catch the last installment of the Broadway season when The Producers take the stage with three great performances on May 4 and 5. The 2006-2007 Broadway in El Paso series, sponsored by El Paso Electric, featured such big hits as Cats and Jesus Christ Superstar, which both sold out immediately. Mamma Mia! and Forever Tango were such hits that the promoters added performances to keep up with the high demand. The announcement for the 2007-2008 season is approaching, and the lineup is as exciting as ever. Stay tuned!
