Beggin’ for Big Bun
by Abel Chuma Bustamante

When you head to Big Bun Hamburgers, expect to find grilled meat– never frozen– and succulent fresh toppings, like juicy tomatoes, snappy onions, crisp lettuce, crunchy pickles and your choice of condiments. Big Bun has been in business for more than 40 years, welcoming customers with a menu of items all under $5 that includes burgers, sandwiches, chili bowls, hot dogs and burritos, among other mouth-watering items.

Greeting various customers in El Paso’s Downtown, Big Bun plays host by serving every customer with a smile. You never know who will be enjoying a grilled chicken sandwich next to you as you bite down on a mushroom cheese burger or a side of curly fries; Big Bun customers run the gamut, from high-powered politico to average Joe Downtown shopper. Like to take a walk on the wild side? Packets of jalapeño salsa are ready for the taking, but consumer beware— or just plan ahead and buy a large drink. Hamburgers not your style? Low-carb plates are also available. In all, Big Bun has the needed punch to knock out the rumble and grumble of an empty stomach or the required energy for the second half of the work day.

Located at the corner of East Franklin and North Stanton, Big Bun also welcomes phone orders and takes pride in its fast delivery. Call 915.533.3926, or, for an instant menu, go to www.bigbunhamburgers.com. Photo by Miguel Angel Paredes

The Tap

by Lisa Degliantoni

One of the most authentic bars in Downtown El Paso is the Tap on San Antonio. The décor, staff, jukebox and pool table all make it just funky enough to be campy and cool. You can get a bucket of Tecate for $6 and chips and salsa, or you can get $7 shots of the finest Tequila on the market. The jukebox features everything from Tejano hits to Rick James, and the dance floor holds about four couples. Big mirrors line the walls, so you can watch the evening unfold all around you. The Tap also serves up good Mexican food. Stop by for lunch and try anything on the menu for a filling, inexpensive meal. Photo by Miguel Angel Paredes
